Marathon Training: Week 3 + July Roundup
Well, we've made it to August. Where did the year go?! I feel like I just moved to New York and just welcomed in 2015. I guess what they say about getting older is true. (Especially now that I have looming student loan payments due every month.)
While the year has been moving quickly, lots of fantastic things have happened this year and more amazing things are coming. One of which, will be happening in September. If you need to be caught up to speed, as you can tell by the title of this post and the two before this one, I'm in marathon training mode!
I do have a confession for week three though... I was a bad and didn't meet my allotted milage.
Do I have a valid reason for not meeting my scheduled mileage? Yes and no. Did I have every intention of meeting my milage for the week? Yes. Did I miss my mileage by a horrifying amount? No. But was one of those runs I missed a long run? Yep.
I guess my reasoning for telling you this is that... well, I don't quite feel guilty about it. Between my fiancé's best friend (and future Best Man) being in Manhattan for only two days and this might be the only chance of me meeting him to the medical exams I had to have done, missing being under mileage for me isn't world ending.
I think that as a runner, you have to come to grips with lots of things, such as: not being the fastest, those six miles seeming a lot longer than you remembered, forgetting there were killer hills in an area, and missing training days.
Is it beneficial for me to miss training days? Absolutely not. Did I feel the wrath of the running gods attacking my quads for the first run back? Absolutely. But tomorrow is a new day, next week is a new week, and we move on from it. While I could have done without the necessary medical issues, I'm not complaining about missing some mileage. :)
I'd also like to announce that I've invested in a hydration backpack! I took it on a quick test run yesterday for shorter mileage before the long run tomorrow.
I have to admit, I was a little nervous buying this thing - it came with a hefty price tag. I'm quite small and I don't weigh much so I was concerned with how heavy a 2 liter water backpack would be. But I was also tired of struggling to hold a water bottle - my hand barely fits around bottle and the weight of it makes my arm sad. (I know, I'm annoying.) And for the longer runs, well those tiny 16 oz. things probably weren't going to cut it.
Well, after my run yesterday, I'm happy to say, I can barely feel the weight of it. And knowing that I don't have to wear an armband on my run is an amazing feeling. And all the extra pockets! During warmer runs, I always end up taking my tank off and having to stuff it into the back of my shorts in some way, so I can now throw it into the backpack! There's also an extra bottle that fits into a pocket on the front and pockets for gel packs and pills. And the bonus? It matches my new running shoes!
July was definitely a crazy month for me - from the aforementioned over the past week to going blonde to helping a group of girls celebrate moving onto a new chapter in their lives to reaching 25% of my fundraising goal (woop woop!) - I have to say, life is good and I'm looking forward to the rest of the year.
I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone that has donated so far to my fundraiser! You're not only helping to make an impact in the lives of so many that have had to live with poverty, injustice and hunger, you're also making a dream of mine come true. I know, that sounds cheesy. But if you've followed me for some time, you know that I used to run 1 mile and call it a day.
